Therefore, it is somewhat surprising that not more has been undertaken to examine a small but emerging sub-genre of memoir by Plain People societies that I am proposing to name ‘ex-Amish memoir.’ The popularity of this genre can be contributed to the success of voyeurism, a fascination with the “exotic,” the great demand for “wholesome” Christian books dealing with the Amish (referred to as ‘bonnet books’) as well as the memoir boom. Yet, it is rare that representations of Old Order Amish perspectives described in creative non-fiction become a New York Times bestseller or reach wider mainstream audiences.
