(★★½ rounded up for narration) Narrator Suzanne Elise Freeman did a very good job with various voices & 'vocal acting'. So-so start to Chicagoland Vamps spin-off I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series!!! In my opinion, the best narrators bring the story to life but in an understated manner that doesn’t distract the listener from the storyline. The book kept my interest, was well written, and the narration was excellent. The main character doesn’t idealize her parents or hate them instead she tries to discover who she is as an individual outside of her parents’ shadows. However, in my opinion, this book was a lot like the beginning of the Chicagoland novels~ written in the voice of a young adult just coming in to her full power and trying to figure out where her place is in the world. In addition, the cover of the book made me think of a Young Adult novel, so I thought it would be written in a younger voice. Though I loved the Chicagoland series and was super exited for this book, I didn’t have high expectations, as spin-off series can often be a pale imitation of the original.
